This is a revision of a book initially titled Shadow on the Tetons; David E. Jackson and the Claiming of the American West and published in 1993. Over the intervening nineteen years new documentation and insights have emerged that significantly expand on Jackson's role as the mountain superintendent who held the Smith, Jackson & Sublette partnership together through trying years when their downstream supplier William H. Ashley proved duplicious and partner Jedediah Smith failed to contribute to mountain operations. This is a must read for those who wish to know more about the formulative years of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade.

Life is a Bitch, and then you die. A tough subject for a bio, but that an be said about most fur trapper/traders. Well researched, taps into secondary sources and financial records. Really liked the 'different' perspective of Jed Smith. The accounting of how the government manipulation of frontier land and the depressions on the frontier because of that is notable. It really stuck it to Mr. Jackson, not once but twice. An enduring figure and a damn fine American from a difficult and trying time. If you want to know how difficult it can be to be a business man in hard time, (or any for that matter), take big bite out of $H*t sandwich, or just read about Mr. David Jackson, The Shadow of the Tetons. For those that this is part of ongoing reading of the fur biz, I see a common theme: Stay in the mountains!! St. Louis is disease infested rat hole!!! It kills men, some of the best of men.Product details
